For ages 12 and above
June 28 - July 2, 2021

Costuming 101 is a one-week sewing and design camp for ages 12-adult. It is split into two portions: Intro to Sewing, held each day between 9:30 am-12:30 pm and Intro to Costume Design, an optional add-on for $75 which will run from 1:15-4:15 pm each day.

Intro to Sewing, taught by RoseLynne Bowman, will teach basic sewing skills, including hand and machine sewing. The class will take students from the preparation of sewing through completion of a finished project. Hand-sewing techniques will include selection of threads and needles, how to sew on buttons/snaps, and how to sew simple hem stitches. For machine sewing, participants will learn the parts of the machine and how to thread one, as well as how to use straight stitch, reverse, and zigzag stitches. Whether they choose to create a garment or a crafty gift, each student will have a finished product by Friday!

Intro to Costume Design, taught by Tara Raczenski, will give participants hands-on training and experience in costume designing for the theatre, with over 10,000 costumes, fabrics, and accessories to utilize. Class time will consist of a brief overview of theatrical costume design basics, as well as the history of clothing, timed team and individual "challenges", and a culminating costume parade at the end of the week.

Enrollment is limited for this camp due to spacing considerations, so register soon!

About the Instructors:
RoseLynne Bowman
has sewn since she was 5 years old and began sewing for others when she was 11. By high school, RoseLynne discovered theatre, initially through friends' church youth groups. RoseLynne was active with theatre all through college and then in Charlotte, NC, with the LT of Charlotte and Spirit Square. RoseLynne’s career has been as a Teacher for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Recently, due to the COVID pandemic, she came out of retirement to work with D/HH students on a part-time basis. Teaching is RoseLynne’s life’s work; teaching sewing is both her passion and dream.

Tara Raczenski is the LTWS Costume Shop Manager, who got hooked on costumes with LTWS five years ago by volunteering to work on Sense & Sensibility. Since that time, she has designed ten shows for LTWS as well as other organizations around the Triad, including an all-female version of 1776 for which she won best Costume Design, and for RhinoLeap's Equity production of To Kill a Mockingbird. Tara also enjoys utilizing her degree in performance onstage, when she gets the chance, and adapting classic literature for the stage. Her version of Treasure Island was selected winner for the 2018 Forsyth County New Play Initiative. Tara is also a five-year member of The Jane Austen Society of North America.

Payment plan available: $50 deposit plus 2 payments of $37.50, paid every four weeks.
